John Strasberg

The organic creative process

Life, work and teaching

John Strasberg developed an approach to acting that he calls the organic creative process. His studio's teaching centres on the individual actor's capacity for inspiration and spontaneous life within the circumstances of a character and play.

The programme places technique within scene work. Preparation develops the actor's ability to recognize impulses and channel them into behaviour. The studio describes its foundation through the Nine Natural Laws of Creativity and the actor's knowledge of self and use of self.

The actor's study

His teaching has an international presence, with the studio identifying work in New York, Paris, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Rome, and Milan. It also offers development workshops for teachers and directors.

For your study, keep John Strasberg's approach distinct from Lee Strasberg's Method. Their relationship is part of the history, while the later teacher's account of creativity has its own language and practices. Read his explanation closely, then compare the particular acting questions each approach addresses.
