How does emotional experience help you pursue what you need?
The Power of the Actor, by Ivana Chubbuck.
What the book addresses
Chubbuck's twelve-step approach organizes preparation around pursuing an objective through the role's obstacles. A revised and updated edition appeared in 2025; keep it distinct from the earlier edition.
How to read it
Read the steps as a connected preparation process. A powerful feeling does not by itself tell the audience what you are attempting or why the other person matters. Notice how a proposed choice affects the exchange rather than measuring its usefulness solely by intensity.
An original rehearsal investigation
Name the character's immediate need in a short scene and identify the obstacle the partner actually presents. Try a playable action, then observe what the response makes necessary. Afterwards, ask whether your preparation increased contact or encouraged you to demonstrate a predetermined emotional result.
Connections and distinctions
The studio's historical archive documents use of techniques from this book at The Jason Bennett Actors Studio. That supports a specific integration connection; it does not establish that every JBAS exercise belongs to Chubbuck's system. Compare her preparation framework with Morris's obligations and choices, keeping both authors' terms clear.
This is an original JBAS reading guide with an attributed overview and study questions. Read the complete book for the author's developed argument and exercise instructions.
