Respect for Acting

What makes your behavior particular to this person in this situation?

Respect for Acting, by Uta Hagen, with Haskel Frankel.

What the book addresses

Hagen's first major acting book connects the actor's preparation with specific behavior, circumstances and practical investigation. Haskel Frankel is credited with Hagen in this volume.

How to read it

Read the practical work in relation to the circumstances it establishes. Objects, tasks and personal details become useful when they change what you do. A long biography or elaborate arrangement of props cannot substitute for a concrete relationship and a present need.

An original rehearsal investigation

Choose a simple activity your character has reason to complete. Establish where the necessary objects are and what makes the activity matter now. Add a partner whose arrival changes the situation. Observe how the interruption affects the activity without planning a demonstration of emotion.

Connections and distinctions

A Challenge for the Actor develops Hagen's later teaching and deserves its own reading, rather than being treated as the same book with another title. Compare the practical questions with Script and Character Analysis, Externals and Sensory Work. Similar concerns do not erase differences in terminology or training sequence.
